If you picked up the New York Times on Jan. 19, you might have seen a familiar face on the front page. Parents as Teachers, a St. Louis organization that supports new and expecting mothers with doula services and breastfeeding consultants, was the focus of an article entitled “Fighting the Odds With Doulas for Black Women.”
Tara Ervin, a certified doula with PAT, was the focus of the photo that ran on the front page. The article told the story of why Ervin and others at PAT became interested in becoming doulas and how the program is helping underserved Black St. Louis families. As the article explained, Black women are almost three times as likely to die from a maternal cause as white women.
Parents as Teachers has been a partner of the Community Impact Network since 2019. PAT provides a wide variety of services focused on helping families raise children to be healthy, safe, learning and ready for school.
